"Women are grateful to men when they label us ‘good women,’ for such women are the ones to whom men offer love, protection, and other kindnesses. Men bestow this label on women when we align ourselves with men, giving up alliances with women and supporting male domination. This label is so valued by women that we compete with one another for this scarce resource, men’s kindness. Many women consider men to be good husbands, good fathers, and ‘good catches’ if they are ‘good providers’, even if they beat their wives or molest their children. As Johnson (1989) points out, women feel overwhelmed with gratitude when men declare a U.N. ‘Decade of Women’ or a U.S. ‘Year of the Woman’– as if men owned time."
